Since our data crowd-sourced, we make every effort to validate the quality of the data used in our reports, while others with poor quality are discarded. Although the size of data available to us at this stage is not sufficient for any conclusion, the following points can be highlighted from the charts;

  1. More accidents occur during the day on Lagos and Inter-City routes, which means that most accidents are not a function of visibility or poor weather condition.
  2. Accidents reported were highest on Tuesday in Lagos, while Saturday and Sunday recorded the highest accidents on Inter-City routes in August.
  3. It is difficult at the moment to confirm injuries and fatalities for accidents on Lagos routes, but we are working out ways to solve this puzzle.
  4. On Inter-City routes, Truck related accidents recorded the highest fatalities with 74 counts, while Commercial Bus related accidents recorded the highest injuries with 79 counts.
  5. Men are twice injured and killed than women in road accidents reported in August.
  6. Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, and Ebonyi recorded the highest fatality count respectively, while Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Anambra, Kwara and Sokoto recorded the highest injury count their inter-city routes.
  7. Road accident is one of the major sources of traffic congestion on Lagos routes and violent death across Nigeria which could be forestalled.

Accidents are underreported in Nigeria and around the world. We have a vision to build an accident database that would help visualize, understand, locate and forestall road accidents, while making our data open and accessible to all for understanding the problem depth.

Together, we can make Nigerian roads safe again. Simply contribute by tweeting your accident reports, suggestions and comments to @accidentdatang or accidentdatanigeria@gmail.com
